From In-Person to On-Screen: Starting Your Remote Interpreting Journey

Presentation Overview:
Remote interpreting has become an integral component of many interpreters’ professional practice and continues to evolve rapidly. Whether you’re new to VRI or an experienced remote interpreter seeking to refresh your foundational knowledge, this workshop provides essential guidance. We’ll examine various remote interpreting modalities, assess readiness indicators, explore common platforms, develop encounter management techniques, and discuss advocacy approaches for ensuring equitable language access. While VRI presents distinct challenges, it need not be daunting. Participants will leave with practical knowledge to confidently begin or enhance their remote interpreting practice.
Learning objectives:
Assess individual readiness and preparedness for remote interpreting work
Analyze scenarios to identify when VRI is appropriate versus when it may compromise access or effectiveness
Establish actionable steps for launching or improving remote interpreting services
Presenter: Danielle Meder is a nationally certified ASL interpreter with over 17 years in VRS and video remote interpreting as an interpreter and operations leader. She completed the Certificate in Healthcare Interpreting program at RIT-NTID in 2017. Danielle is a licensed trainer and co-author of The Remote Interpreter International for Cross Cultural Communications. Danielle is passionate about advocating for quality and effective language access, supporting the advancement of interpreter training for spoken language interpreters, and supporting the communicative autonomy of all! Currently, Danielle works for Equiti, a language solutions organization.
