Connection Matters: Soft Skills for Remote Interpreting
Presented by: Danielle Meder
Presentation Overview: Technology continues to reshape communication, requiring interpreters to develop skills that extend well beyond linguistic expertise. This workshop addresses the practical realities of remote interpreting—examining how to maintain professionalism, effectiveness, and meaningful connection when working in virtual environments.
Remote interpreting success hinges equally on interpersonal skills and interpretation accuracy. Building rapport, reading digital communication dynamics, and fostering trust are not supplementary to the work—they are integral to it. From unstable connections and obscured body language to nuanced cross-cultural exchanges, interpreters require expanded competencies that blend technical proficiency with strong relational skills. This workshop provides practical strategies for managing virtual interactions and fostering transparent communication that honors everyone’s communicative autonomy.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this workshop, interpreters will be better able to:
- Analyze how different communication styles influence encounters, participants, and the interpreting profession.
- Apply strategic scripting techniques in diverse situations where thoughtful mediation is essential to encounter success.
Presenter: Danielle Meder is a nationally certified ASL interpreter with over 17 years in VRS and video remote interpreting as an interpreter and operations leader.
